The Back of Beyond

Winter Soldier

During an earthquake that shook San Fransisco, Leo Novokov was awoken. A Russian sleeper agent, he was awoken from his stasis with no recollection of where he was or what mission he was on. Slowly he began looking for clues, secret messages hidden in daily newspapers from his handler but instead he found that his long dead comrade, the Winter Solider, was now a celebrated American hero. Jealous of James’ new life, Novokov begins hunting him down, starting with anyone with a known association to him. With SHIELD aware of his activities, James and Natasha begin to follow his breadcrumbs of dead bodies. They find that Novokov has also kidnapped a defected Russian scientist, Professor Rodchenko, whose one job within Department X was to reprogram Russian agents, to turn them into what ever soldier the they needed them to be. As Natasha and James get closer to Novokov, he sets a trap – a trap to kidnap Natasha. Using Rodchenko, Novokov reprograms Natasha into her former soviet self – ballerina Natalia Romanova. With Novokov, planning to set off a bomb somewhere in Manhattan, James goes off the radar to track him down personally. Tracking them down, he confronts them: two against one. Managing to shoot Novokov, when he goes to save Natasha she doesn’t remember who he is. SHIELD takes Natasha in but after repairing her memories, she remembers everything that has happened in her life – everything except James. Knowing that perusing her will only cause them both heartache, he gives up on her, saying that she is better without him.

‘She is better off without me… And that is Leo’s final move. Even though he’ll spend the rest of his life in solitary… he still wins. I try to image my life without her and all I see is pain and heartbreak. But at least I’ll be the only one feeling it. I take solace in that thought and hold on to it for as long as I can. But it won’t be long enough.’

If you were here beside me instead of in New York If the curve of you was curved on me I’d tell you that I loved you before I ever knew you ‘Cause I loved the simple thought of you If our hearts are never broken and there’s no joy in the mending There’s so much this hurt can teach us both There’s distance and there’s silence, your words have never left me They’re the prayer that I say every day(x)

… and she was so elusive with her green eyes. They were striking, deep and determined. But they also added to her sexuality - her cunningness. She would used them to lure you in, trap you then make you confess all your secrets. He was no better with his blue eyes so sharp and piercing. How he would spot you from a mile away. How it made his accuracy perfect and he would never miss a shot. It made them a pair - the perfect assassin couple. Both dangerous and willing to…

One of Department X’s sepcailies was brain washing - erasing memories, impaling new ones. Rodchenko, he was the one who made me believe I was a ballerina for several years.

‘You are a spy, not a solider - now you want to wade into a war,’ he turned to look at her, questioning, his eyes burning bright with curiosity. He knew her. He knew her too well to let a comment like that slide. She was trained – trained for combat, for defence. He’d seen the way she fought – her determination, her accuracy, her force. He knew she could fight – fight to save her life, to save her partners life, the people around her. But that was not what she did - not at SHEILD. She wasn’t front line. She didn’t fight to save the day. No. She was a spy. She infiltrated, she went undercover, she interrogated and tortured until she got the information she was looking for. She fought, yes. But only in defence, only to save herself, only to give herself enough time to get the fuck out of there before all hell broke loose. But actively going into a battle - that wasn’t her. And he knew it. He knew there was something wrong, some off, something strange about the whole situation. She had stared down a God, looking him in the eye and asked him to release her friend, her partner, the only family she knew. And he had gotten to her, used it against her. He knew her interrogation techniques. If she didn’t pretend let herself be interrogated, she gave everything away to make it seem like she was co-operating. And now, now he wondered if maybe she had given a little too much away. ‘Why? What did Loki do to you?’
